Careers
Too many developers endure lengthy commutes to grey offices in anonymous cities. I am going to change that.
- David Mytton, Boxed Ice Founder
About us
Boxed Ice is a software development firm based in the UK. We have the best people working on interesting projects solving complex problems within the best working environment. We work on our own projects building tools that we need ourselves, for example Server Density, our hosted server monitoring service.
Tools etc
- We do the majority of our work using PHP and Python, but also use Objective C for iPhone development.
- Of course, we also use HTML, CSS and JS for frontend work.
- We use GitHub and Kiln for source control and FogBugz for bug/task tracking and customer support.
- MySQL is used for customer accounts, invoicing, etc (i.e. where transactions are needed).
- We use a non-RDBMS, MongoDB, for the performance critical work (e.g. storing server monitoring data).
- All of our servers are Red Hat Enterprise Linux hosted by Rackspace across multiple data centres.
- Testing is done using cloud servers provided through Amazon EC2 and The Rackspace Cloud.
Cool facts
- Our primary database master has 72GB of RAM and quad core processors.
- We are working with Rackspace to develop their managed auto failover service for multiple data centres.
- The company founder, David Mytton, is an in-active member of the php.net documentation team.
- Our Server Density database is over 500GB.
- We built the graphing functionality in our server monitoring iPhone application by hand.
How you work
You can work when and how you want so long as the work is done. We work closely together to mentor each other but also expect you to use your skills and experience to do what you feel is best. We communicate extensively via GTalk and Skype. All positions are work from home with regular meetups where possible.
What you will be working on
Interesting and complex problems like integrating with cloud provider APIs, accessing system (Linux, Windows, OS X, Solaris, FreeBSD) APIs to get performance data, statistical analysis and trend prediction, real time alerting through e-mail, SMS and iPhone push and creating cross platform code using Python.
What you won't be working on
Boring and repetitive tasks like building unit test suites, poorly written legacy code with no documentation and servers that could crash at any minute.
But aren't Google/Apple/etc also awesome places to work?
Probably, yes. Boxed Ice is different because it is a small startup. We are very new and still in the early stages so you have the biggest opportunity to be a real part of the core team. If you want to work in a larger, more corporate environment then do check out Google and Apple jobs. That's not Boxed Ice.
